Yesterday, I detailed the first of my tactics that could aid the Blaugrana in their quest to win the Supercopa, and as promised, I have plenty more. While yesterday’s plan was about Lionel Messi dropping deep, and FC Barcelona playing without a centre-forward, today’s idea could not be more contrasting.

Perhaps Pep Guardiola should play a centre-forward, an old-fashioned number 9. 

Maybe the Santpedor-born manager should opt to play Gerard Pique.

Before you say that I have gone mad, and that Pique is guaranteed a starting place anyway, I have got to be clear:

Guardiola could move Pique forward, and have him play as a striker.

Now, this would leave a gap in defence, and yes, I have been highly critical of Guardiola’s decision to play Sergio Busquets in Carles Puyol’s place, but on this occasion, I will make an exception. The back four would contain Alves and Adriano on each flank, with Eric Abidal and Busquets in the middle. This would leave a gap in midfield, and one would assume that Javier Mascherano would be the obvious replacement.

Well, I have another idea. The problem against Real Madrid was not defending, but instead chance creation. Therefore, why not play an über-creative midfield consisting of Xavi, Thiago and Iniesta?

Xavi was hailed as a long-term successor to Guardiola, and Pep played in defensive midfield. In fact, I was having a discussion on Twitter with Sebastian, and Gene Um from The Busby Babe about Xavi, and how he would be perfect for a deep-lying role, much like the one that Andrea Pirlo played for AC Milan. It may be a gamble to try it out in the Supercopa, in El Clasico, but a change appears to be necessary.

While I used Alves and Messi as the example, this can be easily done by Adriano and Pedro on the other wing, and of course, Pique is the one they are aiming for on every delivery. Playing an old-fashioned number 9 is not the Barca way, but it would force the Madrid defense deep. If the defense are deep, Pepe will either have to drop deep, or there will be a lot of space between the midfield and the defense.

With Xavi, Iniesta and Thiago in addition to Pedro and Messi, that space would be exploited at every opportunity, and Barcelona would benefit.

Playing Pique in centre-forward may be unorthodox, but think of the reaction from Madrid to that teamsheet. They would assume that Pique would be in defense, and play as they would usually, but when the teams took the field, with Pique as a striker, Real would be forced to change things up. Mourinho thinks he knows what Barcelona are going to do, and is briefing his players accordingly.

Perhaps the best option would be to change things up, maybe the best option would be to play Pique as a center-forward.

 Wallaby scrumhalf Will Genia says that his opposite number Fourie du Preez will be the player who will make "a massive difference" for South Africa in the Tri-Nations test this weekend.

Genia said he will be lining up against the best No. 9 he's seen by "by far" if, as expected, Du Preez returns to the Springboks' lineup for the first time in nearly two years in Saturday's game at King's Park in Durban.

Du Preez, part of the 2007 World Cup-winning team, missed the entire 2010 international season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The Wallabies are aiming to make up for a shaky defensive effort against New Zealand against what is expected to be a near-full strength team following Springboks second-stringers' heavy defeats in Australasia.

"He (Du Preez) is in my opinion probably by far the best halfback I've seen play," Genia said. "He's always someone I've tried to learn things off and model a little bit of my game around.

"He fits in to how they (South Africa) want to play their game: his kicking game, his running game, his passing game and his vision. He always makes the right decision and controls a game very, very well. He's world class and he'll make a massive difference."

Du Preez will likely be one of a host of fit-again senior players recalled by South Africa coach Peter de Villiers for the first of two Tri-Nations home games, although lingering injury doubts over loose forwards Danie Rossouw and Pierre Spies delayed a planned team announcement on Tuesday. Both sides are now set to announce their teams on Thursday.

With Du Preez ready to return for his first test since November 2009, Genia said Australia would have to learn from being "too passive" in defense against New Zealand in a 30-14 loss last Saturday in Auckland.

"We allowed them (New Zealand) too much front-foot ball and when you've got a side like they do, they'll kill you on front-foot ball," he said. "Our defense was pretty poor last week and the only way to erase that memory is to put in a performance that makes you proud."

Australia have added lock Nathan Sharpe, No. 8 Radike Samo and prop Salesi Ma'afu to its squad following the All Blacks defeat in preparation for a typically physical battle with the beefed-up Boks.

But Genia also backed the all-around influence of Australia's chief tactician and flyhalf, Quade Cooper.

Genia's provincial teammate was outstanding for the Super 15-winning Queensland Reds and was razor-sharp in a convincing 39-20 win over South Africa at home, but was wayward against the All Blacks in Auckland.

"He's obviously quite unpredictable, but the thing about Quade which a lot of people don't know is that he's actually quite a good communicator on the field," Genia said.

"He does give very good direction of play and he's very proactive with his communication. It makes my job a hell of a lot easier and the job for the forwards a lot easier."

We talked with SB Nation's Bucs Nation the other day to prepare for Friday night's preseason game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I asked five questions about the game -- the first one, which you can read here, was about the Bucs offense against the Chiefs defense.

Today, we look at the Chiefs offense against the Bucs defense. First, the basics from last year: Tampa Bay was ranked 17th in total defense, 28th against the rush and 7th against the pass.

I asked what they would do on Friday if they were Chiefs offensive coordinator Bill Muir.

If I'm Bill Muir, I pound the ball over and over again. The Bucs have 2 rookie D-linemen starting and a rookie middle linebacker, so take advantage of that inexperience. The Bucs had a lot of trouble stopping the run last year, and it's doubtful they've fixed that by now. In the passing game I'd try to pressure the safeties deep. While the Bucs managed to do a good job limiting big plays in the passing game, the two starting safeties lack range in pass coverage.

This works in pretty nicely with what the Chiefs should want to do offensively. First and foremost, make sure the running attack is running smoothly. That's the bread and butter. Second, we know QB Matt Cassel struggled a little bit with the deep ball last year so this may give him an opportunity to get some work in there. I think we really just want to see some deep touchdown passes regardless.

In hopes of getting fans excited about the possibility of the lockout ending and football actually being played this season, the NFL announced the preseason schedule for 2011-2012.

After failing to make the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, the San Diego Chargers will be looking to turn around the misfortunes of last season. They will get a chance to show off their preseason goods in front of a nationally-televised audience.

According to the preseason schedule released today on NFL.com, The Chargers are set to host the Seattle Seahawks in prime time on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN during the first week of NFL action.

This contest will be a rematch of a game last season that Chargers' fans would love to forget.

After coming off a home-opener win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chargers traveled to Qwest Field in hopes dominating a sub-par Seahawks team and hopes of shaking those infamous slow-start ghosts.

However, that wouldn't be the case. The Seahawks would capitalize on the special teams' woes of the Chargers. Kick returner/running back Leon Washington would return the opening kickoff of the second half 101 yards for a touchdown, and would later return another kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, essentially 

delivering the final nail in the coffin for the Chargers' hopes of a comeback.

There was a small bright side to the Chargers' loss though: Quarterback Philip Rivers passed for a career high 455 yards.

While fans are hopeful that there will be football this season, and the release of the preseason schedule gives fans something to look forward to, Chargers fans have to wonder if they will actually be able to view Chargers home games on television this season.

For the first time since Nov. 7, 2004, Chargers fans were subjected to local television blackouts, because the team failed to sell enough seats in order to lift the blackout. The Chargers had not lost a regular season or postseason game to a blackout in their previous 44 games.

Granted, the Chargers ended up selling out Qualcomm Stadium after a blackout was announced, because San Diego wanted to see its hometown team play.

The question fans have to ask themselves is.... Do they really want to pay $97 per ticket to watch their favorite team get off to another slow start?

The rest of the Chargers' preseason schedule has them travelling to Dallas on Aug. 20, at Arizona on Aug. 27 and finishing up at home against San Francisco on Sept. 1.

Although Ortiz made an amazing comeback win against Ryan Bader a month ago, you can’t forget that he got crushed by Matt Hamill last October. Don’t be naïve, just days ago everyone was talking about how Ortiz needed to retire and get his head into something else and now we are ready to bet on him beating Evans at BetDSI.eu? I don’t think so.

Rashad Evans:

Record: 20-1-1

Analysis: I know Rashad has been inactive since he defeated the current No. 1 contender Quinton Jackson at UFC 114 last May but he remains as one of the most unpredictable, difficult fighters to beat.

“Suga” is younger, faster and can out box Ortiz. In a three round fight it’s impossible for Ortiz to keep up with his pace as Rashad is agile and has more endurance than Tito. Remember Evans is 4-1 (Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin and Rampage Jackson) in his last five fights with the only loss coming via Lyoto Machida.

UFC 133 Prediction: He’s not the fan favorite, but I don’t follow the masses, I follow the money. Bet on Evans to end it all in the second round.

Australia will play the Bledisloe Cup-Tri Nations Test against All Blacks at Eden Park with the starting side that beat South Africa 39-20 in Sydney two weeks ago.

But the selectors have made three changes to the bench, recalling lock Dan Vickerman, halfback Luke Burgess and winger Lachie Turner to the squad.

Burgess returns to understudy Will Genia after completing his recovery from a fractured hand, which he sustained in training prior to New South Wales Waratahs’ Super Rugby qualifying semi-final defeat by the Blues at Eden Park in mid-June.

Vickerman returns to the bench after performing strongly through 80-minutes for Sydney University last weekend.

Vickerman recently returned to Test rugby, against Samoa in July, when he played 30 minutes from the bench to enjoy his first taste of Test rugby since 2008.

Vickerman, who recently returned to Australian rugby following a period studying in England, was named in the tour party at the expense of Western Force captain Nathan Sharpe.

Waratahs wing/fullback Lachie Turner was named on the bench as the selectors reverting to the traditional four-forward, three-back split among the replacements after operating with five forwards on the bench against Samoa and South Africa.

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said the changes represented a horses-for-courses approach.

"Burgess and Turner have both worked their way back into contention and have shown that they are now ready to go, while Vickerman really stepped in training last week and reinforced that for Sydney Uni on the weekend," Deans said.

"This is a contest we believe he is well suited to."
