The team moves into the next segment of the preseason with its first home exhibition game Thursday night against a New England Patriots team that scored 47 points last week -- without superstar quarterback Tom Brady at the helm.
After weeks of working out in front of cheering and excited fans packing makeshift bleachers at One Buccaneer Place, the Bucs will stage their first closed practice of the summer Wednesday to prepare for the Pats.
And after a weekend off courtesy of head coach Raheem Morris, the players will resume their grueling practices next week, vying for roster spots as cut-down days and two more preseason contests (Aug. 27 vs. Miami and Sept. 1 at Washington) loom in the coming weeks.
For the record, Morris expressed his pleasure over how camp went -- highlighted by the team's the first preseason test on Friday, a 25-0 road win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
"I think the assessment was the other night, with those guys coming out and playing fast, playing smart, playing hard and playing consistent throughout," he said in his post-practice press briefing. "We can still get better. There are a lot of places to improve. . . . We'll continue to grow. I feel good about it."
Coming into camp out of an extended lockout, it was hard for NFL teams to know what to expect once players arrived and began workouts. But Morris remarked that he had high expectations from the start and wasn't disappointed.
"I didn't expect us to have a big drop-off," he said. "I have some high character, quality young men. So I wasn't expecting to see a lot of people come back out of shape and all that stuff. . . . We still have a lot of room to get better, but I look forward to getting better."
Morris was happy with what he called "good, hard, physical play" during camp. He also noticed some interesting differences between this year and 2010.
"I think you've seen guys coming back knowing exactly what we're going to do in some of the situations we talk about," he said. "What's been different (than last year) was seeing Josh (Freeman) teach quarterbacks and younger receivers. And watching (linebackers) Quincy Black and Geno Hayes really form that role for Mason Foster, and watching a (Gerald) McCoy come back and really grab (rookie defensive end Adrian) Clayborn and show him what we're going to do . . . That would be the difference -- seeing some of your players who are coming back and starting to get better help those younger guys to be better."
The Bucs offense stole the show during Monday's practice, but Tuesday it was the defense that shined -- picking off passes from three different quarterbacks during simulated game drills. "That was great -- a competitive day," Morris said.
The next step comes Thursday at Raymond James Stadium against an always-challenging New England team and head coach Bill Belichick, who started their preseason schedule last week with a 47-12 win over Jacksonville.
"It's kind of hard to say the Patriots wouldn't be a better measuring stick," Morris said. "It's a great football team that plays hard, plays fast; and you hate to say it doesn't matter who plays for them – but it really doesn't. They've got the Patriot way. They designed it. They've got the brand name. And we're looking forward to them coming to our house and playing us."
Exhibition outcomes don't mean much, if anything. But for a Bucs team with eyes on winning the NFC South this season, the matchup should be an interesting gauge of their post-camp progress.
