But should the Eagles and Steelers each be considered favorites for their respective conferences?
The Eagles have certainly put themselves at the forefront of the Super Bowl talk with one of the most impressive offseason hauls in NFL history.
Philadelphia has acquired, via trade or free agency, 14 players—six of which are former Pro Bowlers.
Leading that list is cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who many consider one of the top two or three cornerbacks in the NFL. He'll immediately bring the shutdown presence that championship teams now need in this era of football.
Just landing Asomugha would have made for a positive offseason for most teams, but GM Howie Roseman and the Eagles were a greedy bunch once the lockout was lifted.
They signed defensive end Jason Babin (12.5 sacks in 2010), defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins (one of the better interior pass rushers in the NFL), receiver Steve Smith (just two years removed from catching 107 passes), quarterback Vince Young (two-time Pro Bowler), Ronnie Brown (4,815 career rushing yards) and also traded for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (2009 Pro Bowler).
That's a pretty impressive list of additions for a team that won 11 games and the NFC East title last season.
However, the Eagles won't have a cakewalk through the NFC. Both of last year's conference title game participants reside in the NFC North and the NFC South has three teams that won 10 games last season.
The Super Bowl champion Packers have most of their key pieces back and will be explosive on both offense and defense. Green Bay GM Ted Thompson has assembled a roster with arguably more talent than Philadelphia while rarely dipping into free agency.
Chicago, Green Bay's divisional rival, is coming off an NFC North title and a trip to the NFC Championship game last season and could still potentially be a threat.
The NFC South is jam-packed with talented teams, too. The Saints, Falcons and Buccaneers should all have their eye on the playoffs. New Orleans and Atlanta are both considered bona fide Super Bowl contenders heading into the season.
While calling the Eagles the favorite in the conference is premature, they'll definitely be in the running. Philadelphia will be picked by plenty to make the conference championship and potentially be the conference's Super Bowl participant.
The Steelers, on the other hand, had their annual quiet offseason transaction-wise, but that's a formula that's worked for them. Their big moves were re-signing Ike Taylor and giving linebacker LaMarr Woodely the extension he earned.
Last season, Pittsburgh made their second Super Bowl in three years, and they'll aim to make it three out of four in 2011. They should have the ammunition to take their best shot, too.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, despite what anyone feels about him off the field, is a winner and underappreciated player at his position. I don't see the winning part of that equation changing this season.
The rest of the offense has plenty of weapons, including Mike Wallace (21-yard per catch average, 10 touchdowns), Rashard Mendenhall (1,273 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns) and Hines Ward (755 yards receiving). Former Jet Jericho Cotchery could provide another receiving threat for Roethlisberger and company.
However, like it's been for so many years, the Steelers' season rests on the play of their defense. If that group continues to play as well as it has in recent years, the Steelers will be contenders again in the AFC.
They'll have company in those ranks, as the Patriots, Jets, Colts and Chargers appear to also have Super Bowl-ready rosters.
New England leads that group, and they'll likely be most people's favorite to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLVI. However, the Steelers probably wouldn't have it any other way, as they are seemingly overlooked every season.
In summary, tonight's Eagles-Steelers preseason matchup very well could be a Super Bowl preview in August. But it's still far too early to start booking flights from Philly and Pittsburgh to Indianapolis.
Both teams are definitely contenders, and strong contenders at that, but each conference has too many talented teams to consider either one a favorite.
